  For hundreds of years, humans all over the world have served their countries faithfully through their armed forces. During those fights, those humans at time had to face off against wildlife as well as their enemy. One fateful war, however, changed the face of humanity for eternity. A new bomb had been invented in the year 2014 CE, an atomic fusion bomb that made the hydrogen bomb look like a child's jest. The destruction of the bomb was not behind the explosive force, it was behind fusing atoms together at random throughout the area of detonation, which was not large; but then again, neither was the bomb. World War three had hit, and every country large enough to have a military fought eachother. Civil wars erupted in some of the largest nations on Earth; all of the fighting stemmed from a single argument between the United States of America, and China over scientific development and how it was, or was not, corrupting the purity of civilization.

  The argument began in a political debate, but quickly spread to the public, and then to other countries, and then the fighting became violent. No one now knows who fired the first shot, but every one knows that whoever did, wouldn't dare admit it. World War Three erupted all over the world, and it was pandemonium. When the new bomb was dropped, all sides claimed not to be responsible, and none of them could care less who launched the bombs, because they hit every nation, every country, and every continent on the globe. The bomb's original purpose failed dismally, however. Science hadn't just corrupted civilization, it had spawned an entirely new species.

  The new species was known to some, but many of the humans in the world, at least at first, feared these new animal-men. The oddest mutations sprang from the very centers of the landing sites, humans who could shift between one, two, or even three animal forms. The creatures were all called savages by the American goverment, and other contries chipped in their own opinions as well; but not a soul could deny that they were not sentient, and quite capable of retaliating. The bombs had hit various points all over the world, and each of the places where the bombs landed spawned different species or breeds. A country was started in both of the Poles, where the animal-men could live and prosper, and the humans could no longer survive. Even several plants became sentient, most of them trees, and began to fend off foreign invaders to their forests, assuring that the wildlife and plantlife would remain intact and growing.

  In some countries, the fighting never stopped, but in some of the larger world powers, the fighting had to stop, particularly in America.Americans had learned a hard lesson about equality during the Civil War, during the Borders War, and during the Revolutionary War, and the president would not have his citizens assaulting eachother and disturbing the peace. Harsh penalties were handed out to speciest offenders, under the jurisdiction of a hate crime, and, eventually, peace was restored to the world through american, brittish, german, and chinese influence. Soon, all that was left was the dust and the rebuilding from the fighting.

  Draconia had its own military, as did every world superpower, and they agreed whole-heartedly to share their training sessions with any foolish enough to step into them. The furre military was dubbed The Draconian Guard, and its boot camp was hell even for its own members, much less the humans who dared enter it. The laws were stated thus over co-operative boot camp legislature.
  1: Any human or furre enrolling in a seperate species' armed forces, however they may see it, must sign a waver of liability. This waver states that furres enrolled in a human military must control themselves amongst their peers, and that any human enrolled in the DG (Draconian Guard) cannot take court action against a furre if he or she is hurt during training, competitions, or drills.
  2: Any violator of the first law must be tried by the World Council, manned by a representative party from at least three nations, the parties and nations able to attend able to swell up to five each.

  The shifters, called as such, ruled many places in power, and were thought by many to be the only valid choice in this new world's leadership. The most watched event in the world was DG graduation day, where the new recruits left bot camp and served as full-fledged soldiers.

  i looked around at the devastation before me. hard to believe that already 5 years had passed since the great war. it looked like the treaty had been signed only 20 minutes ago. i blinked & the landscape returned to normal: hills rolling as far as the eye could see past the fort's titanium walls. a single gravel road stretching from the front gate to the horizon. i popped my pill to help aid in controlling the visions. in front of the training ground, a bus of new trainees stops. an arctic wolf steps out first & looks around. the rest of the group steps from the bus & stops behind him, obviously an alpha. as soon as that thought crosses my mind i see a wartorn battlefield riddled with bullets & bombshells. cinders rise from the flames like the souls of the dead. i see the alpha in a commander's uniform with an eyepatch & a scar running from the ridge of his eyebrow to the middle of his cheek. he is leading a battalion of troops against some humans with sold white eyes.

  the familiar landscape of reality returns. i say aloud to no one in particular, "hopefully it won't come to that." then the sargeant walked up to me. "sir, a new shipment of nuggets is in" we affectionately call trainees nuggets, hoping to make the reality of it all less bleak. "good," i replied. "send them in."

  i looked over the small group. their faces were filled with uncertainty, as if they had suddenly decided maybe government endorsed genocide was a bad idea. of course it was, but sometimes you must sacrifice the few for the good of the many. "so. you think this is it, right? this is your chance to go down in history as heroes? that's a myth. fact: as soon as you signed that document, you officially were removed from every database. every computer. you no longer exist according to the government. if your hopes were dashed by that then get out now." about half of them start to leave. "better yet, stay. if you're a glory hound who just wants to go home & sip at some chardonnay, then too bad. you're going to stay here & do the full course...flawlessly." most groaned in protest. i then realised, most of them were no older than 17. if that. now i was pissed. but not at them. i was pissed at the government for letting it happen. i turned & left for my office.
